Many highways were built in a way that harmed and still harm minority communities. Now many of these highways are crumbling, and cities are weighing how to repair, revamp, or remove them. For racial justice advocates, these infrastructure projects are an opportunity to redress the historical discrimination built into them. The I-81 in Syracuse is an example of the potential to undo this damage and create a new model for reconnecting communities with equitable resources that if successful could provide the kind of rebuilding of wealth and community that is necessary, and could become a blueprint for others to follow.
