Bridging Historical Divides; I-30 Deck Park Concept: An Urban Design Talk

Community Design Fort Worth and AIA Fort Worth invite you for a discussion about I-30 expansion.

TXDot (Texas Department of Transportation) is in the process of evaluating and planning improvements to Interstate 30. Future phases will address the portion of I-30 that runs in front of Arlington Heights High School and through vibrant existing Fort Worth neighborhoods. While this phase might be years in the future, the time to ensure it is planned correctly is now. One suggestion is to "deck" over I-30 in front of Arlington Heights High School between Hulen and Ashland, a proposal that would be a huge improvement over the narrow pedestrian chain link cage walkway that presently exists. In addition, this proposal would return something like the lawn that once existed in front of the school as well as help "stitch" back together communities like Como, Arlington Heights and Alamo Heights that were divided by the highway.

The discussion will be in a panel format with a group of architects and landscape architects who have volunteered their time and expertise to develop concept plans for this proposed deck park as well as community leaders connected to this site. This talk will be held at Arlington Heights High School so that we are near the location to incorporate a walking tour of present conditions.

Panel Participants:

  • Brandon Burns, AIA

  • Lorie Kinler PLA, ASLA
